Schedaero

I led the design of Avinode’s first iOS app, transforming paper-based workflows into a seamless digital experience with real-time trip updates, flight logging, and expense tracking, all optimized for offline use. By conducting field research with pilots and managing a distributed design team, I increased adoption among first-time users by 30%, restored trust with existing customers, and enabled a 20% expansion of market share among larger operators.

The Challenge

For pilots flying private charter flights, they are always on the go. The current solution for managing trip details was to email PDFs back and forth. To solve this, we built out a mobile app that would always give pilots the most up-to-date information on their phone, without having to search through a long string of emails.

Research

Having intervwied pilots and identified them as the primary comsumers of the trip sheet details, we knew there were other users that would also be relying on it for their roles. We identified and spoke with users in Dispatch, who typically emailed updated trip sheets to pilots, as well as the aircraft owners, who need to review and approve upcoming flights.

Product strategy

In order to ensure the continued growth and success of the app, we mapped all of the app's core features, knowing in advance that it would take us a couple of years to fully build out all of them. This allowed us to not only test everything prior to beginning development, but to also validate our roadmap for the future of the product.

Design iteration

We then went through several rounds of design iteration, working with product stakeholders, marketing, and development to better understand the impact and context of the design decisions we were making. Short, continuous feedback cycles allows us to quickly iterate and improve our designs.

Prototyping

We quickly built design prototypes to allow for the minimal interactions needed in order to get actionable feedback from our users. Using our contacts from the research phase, we were able to get the prototype into the hands of real users under real circumstances..

Final Design

We successfully launched the app to great excitement and adoption from our users. All of the feedback we have received since going live has has been praise for the features and usability of the app. Requests for additional new features have all been in line with our existing roadmap, meaning we've been able to respond with quarterly estimates on when the new features will arrive, continuing to build trust and support from our users.
