Photography series completed during the Nes artist residency in Skagastrond, Iceland
A selection of images from my freelance work as a wedding and portrait photograher.
A selection of images I created while an undergraduate student of photography.
As a reversal of the otherwise familiar notion of the “exotic other”, the images in Out of Context take a controlled and intentionally altered approach to the genre of portrait photography. Each portrait examines the complex, paradoxical, and often times futile relationships between Westerners and their attempt at integration into, or even understanding of, cultures outside their native experience. The use of a medical mask in each of the images speaks directly to the person’s inability to communicate, be completely understood, or otherwise express themselves fully in a foreign country.
This works aims at exploring the unique relationships which exist between a young parent and their child. By photographing them in their homes, I am able to not only examine their interactions with each other, but also look at their environment as a defining aspect of that relationship. The project documents the lives of six families; five of which reside in Washington and the sixth in North Carolina.
A series of images created while I was living abroad in South Korea working as an Engligh Teacher.
